The Shetty Life-Cricket theory

I am not claiming any patent here. Nor am I gonna give lectures on this theory. Precisely because India being a cricket centric country, I am sure there are many proponents of the said practice below, but may have not expressed this in full context.

At times when I am down on ideas and need a way out of situations, there is this brainwave - of converting the situation in context of a cricket match.

Simple examples - If there is a lot of work pending and very little time, term it as - "Thats a high Required Run rate". Then think like a batsman in a pressure situation and play it like a game. It has worked.

When there is a long drawn work, testing your mettle and patience - "Its a test match."

Converting situations thus way helps take a layer of pressure off the heart. I say heart because of tendency to bring an emotional angle into issues. Like self-blaming and self-pitying on outcomes of plausible cause analysis. For some the emotional angle takes a better turn, where one pushes oneself emotionally to take charge and manage the situation. Somehow I tend to twine myself into further knots and get impossibly tangled in a utter mess.

Making it into a game increases the scope of a clear analysis. But you do need to process your analysis quickly though. You cant waste too much time equating every factor.

The clarity comes because you keep the analysis light. In a middle of a game you have a target, you need to make a game plan/strategy. But its not some pen and paper chalked detailed analytical plan. Its an instinct driven, learn on the move plan. Your bullish on winning and grab at whatever oppurtunities that present itself(No balls & free hits, power play, extras{freebies}).

Back in 10th (ICSE Boards) drew a World League Plan format. Presuming myself to be the Indian team, I converted the subjects into different teams. Simple factors for classifaction was - Difficulty, trickiness and favouritism.

For example there may be subjects which could be easy, but you could make silly errors. E.g. Mathematics. Make that Bangladesh, if you slip - they pounce on you! Then there is History - Long and strong portion - Australia.

I dont remember the order I used then, but using the logic I designated teams to each of the 11 exams, perhaps making A teams too.

After the exams - at night when I would take a walk I would review the performance. Areas where I didnt get an answer = a wicket. Marks = Runs. By the end of the walk I was done thinking about that subject and move on to the next.

I was stuck in a rut recently.  Everything seemed to be going wrong. A series of mistakes and close to break down point. Then try to load this theory. Didn't work out.

And out of the blue I remembered Sachin Tendulkar. Grateful am I to the back of my mind. Sachin is not my god, but is definately one of the ideals. I just remembered how this man for a period of 21 years, has had his life intervened by the media. There is the media, the public which makes him God one moment and Devil the next. One bad series is enough to rouse national hatred. He is not inhumane that he can merely deflect criticism.

If he has the capacity to sustain an international colonoscopy of his life & performances, I am sure I can take little pow and wow once in a while.

And chart a comeback path staying focused at it. Absorption is the key; whatever helps you stay focused in the 'game', do it.

A Jobs well done

There have been many inventors in our history. But how often have there been a person who was an inventor, re-inventor and an innovator at the same time.

That's Steve Jobs for you. The man who had dreams and created many.

The man who lived up to his quotes- It was his passion to fulfill his passions which drove him to this stature, which made Apple a game changer.

His inventions were created out of innovations rather than necessity. Which is why Apple never had to convince the public why they needed its products, they spoke for themselves.

And the best part was that he came back to the very company which unceremoniously showed him the door.

And he took them ultimate glory, right unto his last breath.

I am inspired. And I promise that I will work hard to leave a legacy behind, that will touch a million lives, even after I depart.

----------Thank You-------------

A Death like experience

Half n hour before going under the scalpel for a permanent settlement of the varicose vein issue,

I was chattering with my surgeon and the anesthetist.

"Can you do the other leg as well?" I asked my surgeon, Dr. Riza Ibrahim.

"Yes.... but.. that will cost you more.." he replied, with a pensive face.

"Not an operation Doc, your shaving the left leg, so shave the other leg also na, otherwise it would look kinda weird no?"

He replied with a boisterous laughter.."Ha ha ha.. but that will also cost you extra ha.."

No surprise, I thought, probably outsource that to Nalini-Yasmin down below.

KDAH, with its state-of-the art infrastructure and facility, and a very well thoguht hospitality management plan, rounded of with excellent doctors - is a haven of a hospital. At least for the suburbs. For one, you don't smell ethylene or whatever that things is. As soon as you enter you feel safe that you are gonna be cured. In fact if you stick to the ground floor, you wont even know it's a hospital.

Anyways, I wasn't nervous about the operation. But i felt peculiar about what it's gonna be like to be under anesthesia?

The drip was inserted on the back of my palm, and then was wheeled on to the surgery room.

"The bed is too small" I complained as they hauled me over it.

Poker-face, the male-nurse replied "It's a table, not a bed."

"Oh, okay. OW OW OW"

Grinning, the anesthesist, Dr. Gaonkar said - "Sorry, were connecting the ECG nodes, your very hairy so we need alternative places"

"My neck!"

"Por favor! Could you please give me the anesthesia? I'd love to take a nap now"

Mid-way thru my last dialogue, I flt a gush in my right hand(where the drip was)

*BLANK!!*

Literally, i don't have any memory what happened then.

And then I woke up, and I cried.

Not tears..but

"NUURRSEEE... SISTER.."

"What happenned?" - Sister Matthews. I'm not sure if thats her name, but she looked like my Bio teacher of the same name, so we'll call her that.

"I CAN'T BREATHE"

"Just calm down"

Ten seconds later..

"SISTEERRR... SISTERR.."

"What?"

"I can't breathe, can you take out the oxygen mask?"

"I think it's there to help you breathe"

"It's not helping me, TAKE IT OUT.."

"Okay.."

"Is my surgery done(only now recollecting why I was here)"

"Yes"

For those of you who don't know, I have a paranoia of suffocation. I shudder a bit everytime before I enter a modern lift. Yes, even an oxygen mask makes me feel constricted.

I have a difficulty in breathing, but then I resume normal breathing in no time.

Two minutes later..

"SISSSTERR... NURSE..." x 10

"What?"

"I am Hungry! plase give me something to eat!"

"Wait.." surveying some form attached to my bed "Doctor has said you cannot eat till 7 pm"

"F#&^%#$&#^$!!^%&**%"

a minute more..

"SISSTERRR..!!" x 15 times..

"What?"

"I am thirsty! Give me water"

"You can't have water also"

"Fffffff..umm.. what's the time?"

"2.30"

"F#%^$@&@%$!!!!?!?!?!"

Mom comes in..

"MAAAA.. THEY aren't giving me FOod..!! I Am thirSTYY.."

"Yes, doctor said you cannot have anything till 7."

"Grrr......."

Anyways, Id unno if you did, but I kindof found a comparison to death and rebirth.

The BLANK - that's what death is like probably. You may know it's coming, accept it its coming, or may come unknowingly, but its just like that BLANK.. which you cannot comprehend once you wake up.

And what do we first do we wake up in another body?

I'm hungry! I'm THIRSTY!! I can't breathe!!

Only thing having not having any memory of any language, we say WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA...

Closing joke-

Even if you are a P.H.D, you come back next life and you learn A B C D.. all over again.
